QuakeCon 2008: id Shows Off Rage Footage!
July 31, 2008 by mruniversal

id software's upcoming (and totally new, I might add) property Rage has been anything but.  So what's the company behind Quake and DOOM to do?  Why, get ready to hype the hell out of the thing, and there's no better place than QuakeCon!  In this surprisingly good shakey-cam video, check out all the post-apocalypse, Mad Max action for yourselves.  Not a lot of gameplay, but I swear that's some in-game graphics there.

Legend Of Chun Li Set Photos - Where's The Street Fighting?
July 31, 2008 by mruniversal

Back in 1993 there were days (literally - days) when I couldn't sleep, because I knew that somewhere in the world actual human beings were working diligently at making the live-action Street Fighter movie.  Van Dam be damned, the fighting franchise helped occupy a significant portion of my life back then, and if my fandom meant losing a few hours of precious sleep, so be it.

Fast-forward to NOW, and you can imagine how much I've learned.  Nearly 15 years worth of experience may not have dried up my enthusiasm like a rotten twig, but it has delayed it somewhat.  So when I hear that somewhere in the world human beings are cobbling together a Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li live-action film, I still lose sleep, only knowing that in my heart it'll probably be atrocious.  I know I'm jumping to conclusion, but head on over to the official site to see the new production stills from the gun-laden action flick from the director of Crade 2 The Grave.  Yeah...another American Street Fighter with guns 'a plenty.  JOY!

Check out the official site and decide for yourselves by clicking right HERE!

Boom Blox Blasts Nearly Half A Million
July 31, 2008 by mruniversal

Although I'm fairly sure that at least 90% of you reading this won't care, I'll speak to those finer 10% of educated and gorgeous types who know a good thing when they see it.  Who would have thought that one of this generation's most original, most genre-breaking and smart games would have come from (of all places) EA?  Yeah, I'm shocked too, and shocked even more knowing that Steven Spielberg collaboration has nearly cleared a cool half-million.  So close...

One of my favorite games this generation, Boom Blox (our impression - read it!) is one of those rare gems that nearly converted everyone I've shown it to.  Oh, the stupid character designs and blippy music may turn off some, but once you've got the hang of things and you've paired your sense of aggressive concentration with total and absolute destruction...good times!

Ragnarok Online Brings The Addiction To Nintendo DS
July 31, 2008 by mruniversal

A few years ago a friend tried their best to introduce me to the growing online addiction known to millions as Ragnarok.  Having known my feelings (i.e. disdain) for all-things MMO, they foolishly thought that maybe this hand-drawn, free Korean-developed system would be the one that finally snagged me.  He thought wrong, baby...wrong, wrong, wrong.

It may not be World of Warcraft, but to its legions of fans the online Ragnarok doesn't need to be.  Cheap and easy (its free and the technology is ancient), the sensation leaves the sheltered world of PC-gaming for the first time as it ventures into the world of portable gaming on the (what else?) Nintendo DS this December in Japan.  Mark those calenders, fans and foes alike!

Official Venom Spin-Off Movie In The Works?
July 31, 2008 by mruniversal

So you saw Spiderman 3 last year, and chances are you walked out thinking, "what THAT Venom?"  In a cinematic slide that could have been far, far worse (think Batman & Robin), the third Spiderman film still managed to be entertaining and fun despite its over-packed core and waste of important villain arcs.  Among them was Todd McFarlane's first bread 'n butter contribution to the franchise, the symbiote-latching Venon pseudo-baddie.

Bad performance by That 70s Show nerd (and I say that with all due respect) didn't help, but the character felt mashed into a bowl of instant potatoes.  Well, it looks like Sony may be rectifying the situation for fans and box-office alike as the Marvel character follows another into the wonderful world of spin-off films.

Johnny Depp Cast In Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland!!
July 29, 2008 by mruniversal

Remember how excited we were when Tim Burton cast his one-and-only Johnny Depp as the modernized Willy Wonka?  Having come off a career-defining role as Jack Sparrow didn't hurt, and collectively we all figured his take would at least be on par with the legendary Gene Wilder.  Too bad this wasn't the case, as Depp's crackhead Wonka brought down the whole production and erased whatever trickle of magic the new film might've had.

With Burton readying his 3D version of Alice and Wonderland for Disney, looks like its Take 2 on the Johnny Depp train as the wild-hair director has cast the actor in yet another pivotal role...The Mad Hatter!

Stellar Thunderforce VI Trailer Will Incinerate You!!
July 28, 2008 by mruniversal

Ever since word firstcame out that yet another of my treasured franchises from time-past would be reappearing, I've been stirred like nothing else.  The series that single-handedly helped make me a Sega Genesis fan forever is returning, some ten years past a rather dismal part V and lackluster part IV.  So with a decade and mediocrity between me and the good stuff, why am I excited?  The music, man, just listen to that cheese grate its layers 'o love on my damaged soul.  That's Thunderforce III music remixed and as lovely as ever!

ComicCon 08 - Resident Evil: Degeneration Trailer
July 28, 2008 by mruniversal

Oh man, did they manage to get some actual ZOMBIES in my Resident Evil??  It might not be the wildly anticipated Part 5 that's got panties in bunches, but the upcoming direct-to-DVD (and Blu-ray!) Resident Evil: Degeneration is looking mighty good.  Essentially a game without all those boring 'interactive parts', the film looks to showcase some familiar faces, familiar sounds, and a few old-fashioned, head-poppin good times.  Sounds good to me, and if you're curious the film hits Japanese theaters soon, with a North American disc release later this year.

Rune Factory: Frontier Trailer Will Grow On You!!
July 28, 2008 by mruniversal

Are you ready to...cultivate some land?  Farm some crops?  From the creators of Harvest Moon comes Rune Factory: Frontier, an open-ended and completely expansive take on the old formula that so many loved with the Harvest Moon franchise and the first console entry from the Rune Factory series that began life on the Nintendo DS.  Consider this one separate from the Harvest Moon lineage and you'll be fine.  Enjoy the trailer, which is looking even better than most imagined!

Mister Slime Trailer For Nintendo DS Totally Blows!
July 27, 2008 by mruniversal

Southpeek Game's upcoming Mister Slime for the Nintendo DS really does blow...literally.  Use the stylish to stretch, pull, and grab the hot spots of our slimey friend while blowing into the microphone to swim, fly, and even breathe.  Does it look just a bit like my beloved LocoRoco game?  One can only hope!  Get those lungs ready, because its slime-time sooner than you think!

Teaser Trailer For Oliver Stone's "W" Film
July 27, 2008 by mruniversal

Update: Lionsgate has convinced YouTube to pull the clip.  Fair enough, as they own the thing.  But the commentary below (and after the jump) is still fresh and tasty.  Dig in!

Not sure how long this one will be up people, so if it's gone by the time you click above don't go hollering at us.  Oliver Stone's upcoming George W. Bush drama, aptly named "W" is set to debut theatrically just before this year's presidential election and give the troubled director his one last shot at messing with the 43rd president before he wanders into the sunset.  And by sunset I mean less profitable, as the controversial president has been a marketing boon to many in the novelty business, and I can't imagine that success carrying over to the next guy who takes the office.

Teaser Trailer For Pixar's Latest Film - Up
July 27, 2008 by mruniversal

Will their latest masterpiece Wall-E cementing any last doubts of legendary status in theaters, Pixar Animation Studios is readying their next venture as we speak.  Simply titled "Up", the adventure of an old man and a chubby kid and the magic adventures they're sure to have.  But for now, a teaser...and plenty of balloons.  Enjoy the show, as next year couldn't get here soon enough!

ComicCon: Evil Dead 4 Finally On The Way??
July 26, 2008 by mruniversal

Usually all this talk of remakes, re-imagining, and after-market sequels gets the online world abuzz at the relative lack of original in Hollywood.  Hypocrites!  Its only a bad thing when their favorite franchise of all-time isn't being mentioned - Evil Dead!  Long rumored and even longer denied, it seems that director Sam Raimi (Spiderman) might be picking up the franchise after all these years.  Hail to the king, baby!

Madden 09 Gameplay Video Heats You Up!
July 25, 2008 by mruniversal

Its summer time, which means that pretty soon the gaming world will be going Madden Football nuts, and its unlikely that that the upcoming '09 version will be any different.  But don't let a little thing like sameness stop you from rejoicing and frothing, because EA's got a nifty new video showcasing a whole slew of what's new, new, new!

Happy 20th Anniversary, Madden Football, and here's to many more!

New Facebreaker Gameplay And Features Video Knocks You OUT!
July 25, 2008 by mruniversal

Everytime I look at EA's upcoming Facebreaker boxing game, I can't help but think of that old standby, Ready 2 Rumble.  Same basic look, same insanity...but as EA's version will debut on drastically more popular consoles, it just might have a chance at real success.

The latest video in showcases some of the finer moves from the upcoming Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, while playing fair and teasing a bit of the upcoming Wii version, Facebreaker KO Party.  All with some delightful Peter Moore commentary that you know and love.  The finer things (or features) are waiting!

Stylistic New Street Fighter IV Arcade Trailer Brings Tears Of Joy!!
July 25, 2008 by mruniversal

Yeah, yeah...its yet another Street Fighter IV trailer out there.  But you know what?  It's also a frggin' awesome Street Fighter IV trailer loaded with stylistic, inky artwork and its a certified fact that the arcade game (in Japan) is busting up the joint.  Plus, when that classic theme song chimes in about halfway through, you can take all your Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive boobies and toss 'em out the window.  Substance, people...substance.

Now where's the home console version?  Or even better, where's my US arcade cabinet release?  Can we get a hand here, Capcom?

See the trailer yet?  How about The Dark Knight?  No doubt if you're anything of a Watchmen fan than the last week or so has been driving you absolutely batty (no pun intended) with excitement as one of the most acclaimed graphic novels of all-time gets the movie treatment next year.  But what about the inevitable game to go with it?  Isn't that sort of thing almost standard by now?  Looks like anxious gamers won't be left in the cold, as Warner Bros Interactive will be releasing the videogame adaption using a method all too familiar to comic book fans...

First Quake Live Trailer Excites Your Senses!
July 21, 2008 by mruniversal

A long time ago in a place far, far away...I was an avid PC gamer.  I'd shop the best shops (I miss you Frys!), rock the best video cards, and install so much RAM you'd think I'd gone insane.  It was half-true, because every few months I - like so many others - would dance the foolish dance all over again.  The end results?  Maybe a few extra frames.  That's why it does my heart good to see Quake Live ready to unleash its potentially ground-breaking self onto the world of power-obsessed PC gamers and disrupt their world-view.

Japanese Trailer For Legend Of Kage 2 (Nintendo DS)
July 21, 2008 by mruniversal

Have any of you seen this one yet?  Its easy to imagine how the first real sequel to a 20+ year old NES game wouldn't blow anyone's hyper-radar out of balance, but for those of us who grew up with the original (FYI - it's KAH-GAY, not CAGE!) I'm all a twitter.  In fact, it was the very first game I ever rented, and floatly gameplay aside, loved every second.  Can the new DS sequel live up to such a challange?  We shall see...

Nintendo Power Unveils New Sonic Sword Game?
July 20, 2008 by mruniversal

I'm an optimist.  At least I try to be, because I'd rather trust and be wrong than assume the worst and be right.  But man oh man, its getting mighty tough to support anything Sega is doing with their Sonic the Hedgehog character these past few years.  Even as Sonic apologists do their best to justify the horrible Dreamcast Adventures and sell their souls over a certain Shadow, I'm wishing their was a Videogame Protection Agency that I could call to have them take my beloved blue hedgehog to a better, safer home.

That super website 'o joy 1UP.com not only unleashes the clearest screenshots yet of the upcoming Dead Rising Wii Port, they've also scooped all the good stuff direct from the source (aka translated the recent Famitsu article).  Capcom might have missed the E3 boat and effectively had the third biggest "WOW!" of the show by unveiling what many felt was technically impossible, but they're setting things right by showing off the technically impressive and remastered version for Nintendo's waggle-machine.  Ladies and Gentlemen, say hello to the absurdly awesome and renamed Dead Rising: Zombie Sacrifice!

E3 08: Populous Is Reborn For the Nintendo DS!!
July 18, 2008 by mruniversal

As nerdy as it might sound, my all-time record for playing a single game straight through was with Populous on my Sega Genesis...long, long ago.  Its almost embarrassing how much free time I gave to this one back in the day, but that was the depth of my love at the time.  As I didn't have a PC back then, it was all about the consoles and its nice to see the franchise head to the DS is such a touched-up, stylized way.

New Live-Action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie??
July 18, 2008 by mruniversal

Anyone else go see TMNT when it debuted last year? Oh yeah, nostalgia alone got three tickets out of this long-time fan, and while it was a good little distraction to the cause, I'd just about given up thinking we'd ever see a proper Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.  Sure it was gorgeous, but the story...?  Could have been so much, much more.

Well, it looks like Playmates (the company behind the goo) might be taking another stab at the franchise - and in live-action fashion.  Could it possibly be any worse than the third live-action film, Turtles in Time?

Original Dead Rising Coming To Nintendo Wii?
July 16, 2008 by mruniversal

OK, incredible time.  We all knew that Capcom's smash Dead Rising was getting a Las Vegas-style sequel for the Xbox 360...but what about the original?  You think those cranky, mall-walking dead things would just up and exit the scene without a fuss?  It looks like theliving dead won't get any well-earned rest as they start shuffling over to a certain white-boxed little system that could.  Sound impossible?  Nothing is impossible...if you believe in yourself!

I guess it shouldn't come as any surprise that Sony would be updating their current "Terms Of Use" contract with PlayStation Network (PSN) users, especially considering the pretty nifty features they've been adding to the service lately.  But do they need to be so snotty about it?

Upon reviewing the latest changes to the "Terms of Use", a few choice words jumped out at me, and led me to wonder if anyone higher up at the company had approved such...caustic...language.

E3 08: Sony Announces Massive Action Game (MAG) For PS3
July 15, 2008 by mruniversal

Sony introduces their newest property today, by way of Zipper Interactive, in the for of the massively, massively, multi-player tactical action game MAG (Massive Action Game).  Think you've seen massive?  Brother, you haven't seen anything yet, as MAG aims to put a (wait for it) massive 256 different players inside one, big world.  There aren't egos big enough for this type of action.  With so much action and so many players, this could easily become the SOCOM: MMO that nerds and friends have dreamed about...!

256 player and 1 world...can you imagine the chaos?  Its like Counterstrike times ten!  Although a small trailer for shown, it was all disappointing CG action, and zero gameplay.  Seriously guys...get with the program!  Didn't you learn anything from the Killzone 2 debacle?  When you're going to brag about a new game being only possible on the PS3, how about showing me some PS3 gameplay!!  CG-action?  Brother, my DS can handle that!

Still, game could be cool...more details as they trickle in!

E3: Sony Announces Reduced Price 80 Gig Console $399
July 15, 2008 by mruniversal

Just in, Sony announced that they will be dropping the price of their 80 Gig PlayStation 3 bundle...sort of.  As any true Sony PS3 geek knows all too well *sigh*, Sony's disruptive entry into the next-generation market has resulted in a wide variety of different consoles, most of which have been sent to that big arcade in the sky.  It looks like the standard 40-gig model may be joining the roster as Sony is aiming to consolidate their recent success and help navigate their future.

The newly minted 80 Gig PlayStation 3 model isn't a retread of the current model, which includes both memory card usage, and good backwards-compatability with PS2 + PS1 gaming.  The newly announced 80 Gig model will instead utilize the reduced-cost innards of the standard 40 Gig model, which most likely means zero backwards compatability with PS2, and some PS1.  Goodbye memory card slots as well.  The good news?  Reduced price!  The new set is aiming for a $399 price-point, which at this point is the best possible situation for anyone hoping to see an actual price-drop from Sony anytime soon.

More details as they float in!

What's that you say?  Not going bonkers for the upcoming adapation of comic-god Will Eisner's adaptation (by way of fellow comic-god Frank Miller) of his seminal work, The Spirit?  All this talk of Batman and some Dark Knight keeping you away?  Shame On You!  What, with Nazi Samual Jackson and all sorts of psychodelic imagery floating around, its not something your brain should be without today.  Take a sip.

So take a click on the suspiciously cropped (...) picutre of Ms. Mendes as Sand Saref for all the action you can handle.  Batman can wait a few minutes, and nobody knows how long this link will be up.  Get it while its hot!!

Sizzling New E3 Resident Evil 5 Trailer Boggles Your Mind!
July 14, 2008 by mruniversal

So far this year's E3 has been an interesting mix of the expected (price drops, new sequels) and the unexpected (Final Fantasy XIII on the Xbox 360?  Whoah, baby).  But somewhere in the middle lay the most awesome of them all - expected surprises!  We all knew Resident Evil 5 was going to look amazing, but this amazing?  This incredible?

More action, suspense, and terrifying imagery than ever before...this is Resident Evil taken to the next level.  Masked chainsaw-weilding manmen?  Check!  Bad voice-acting?  Double-check!  Zombie bikers and plenty of fog to lose yourselves in?  Oh you'd better belive that's a big, fat CHECK.  Now check it out for yourselves!!

New Guns N' Roses Song Blasts Into Rock Band 2!
July 14, 2008 by mruniversal

Welcome to the Jungle!  Hot off the heels that Harmonix's upcoming Rock Band 2 will combine the likes of Bob Dylan with Devo (its true!), it looks like our friend Axel Rose is dusting off an unused beauty from his perpetually delayed new Guns 'N Roses album "Chinese Democracy".  Although several versions of the thing have leaked onto the internet over the years, this will mark the first sanctioned appearance of any new material since that little seen "End of Days" devil film (look it up).

"Shackler's Revenge" will join the 80+ set-list from the new Rock Band 2 game, and when you factor in the original game's line-up (not including any purchased DLC music content) you've got all the makings of the world's longest, loudest party.  Like, ever.  Sweet child of mine!!

While I may not be the biggest Final Fantasy fan here at Popzara, I am a fan of blisteringly colorful, highly detailed artwork and amazing animation.  Thankfully (for you!) the latest and greatest trailer for Square/Enix's hugely anticipated, yet heavily delayed RPG Final Fantasy XIII has a new trailer that's chock-full of the good stuff!

Galaga Legions Trailer Lights Up Your Imagination!
July 14, 2008 by mruniversal

Pac-Man: Championship Edition is one of my favorite Xbox 360 games.  Not Xbox Live Arcade games, mind you, but among my favorite Xbox 360 games entirely.  I love that thing so much, I use it to test HD televisions with.  No jokes.  So naturally any game that has the potential to evoke those old/new types of feelings in this old-school gamer will get my attention immediately.

In what's shaping up to be a vastly interesting E3, my favorite game of the day so far has to be the next 'true' Galaga game for the Xbox 360.  Galaga Legions, to be exact, and its looking absolutely fantastic.  Touted as the first real sequel to the classic 80's quarter hog, let's keep this one a downloadable one, too, and I'll be in retro heaven!  Full trailer right after the jump - don't miss it!

Bungie's Official Website Hijacked By New Game Announcement?
July 14, 2008 by mruniversal

Travelers to Bungie's official website today may have noticed a definite lack of trolls, orcs, space mutants, or any of the regular fun bunch.  In fact, with nothing more than a multi-language warning signal, it looks like all hell might be breaking loose sometime...and soon!

Could it be the next long-awaited game from the company behind Zergs and Orcs?  Come to think of it, that would be a great real-time strategy game all its own...hmm.  Hey Bungie - big ideas here.  Call me!  More info (and screen!) after the jump!

New Xbox Experience Detailed - With Details!!
July 14, 2008 by mruniversal

More E32008 Madness as Microsoft continues their onslaught of the senses...can you stand it?  Looks like next on the plate is the complete and absolute redesign of the Xbox Dashboard experience.  If there's one area of the whole Xbox X-perience that Microsoft completely and absolutely dominates, its in their implementation of the Dashboard within the very DNA of their console and its online experience.  Any changes to that structure is no doubt big news.

Spelling mistakes aisde, Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten has unveiled a whole, big list of the changes that are coming.  Rather than paraphrase we've got the goods straight from the source.  You want them, don't you?  Then better start that jumping now! Read More »
