See the trailer yet? How about The Dark Knight? No doubt if you're anything of a Watchmen fan than the last week or so has been driving you absolutely batty (no pun intended) with excitement as one of the most acclaimed graphic novels of all-time gets the movie treatment next year. But what about the inevitable game to go with it? Isn't that sort of thing almost standard by now? Looks like anxious gamers won't be left in the cold, as Warner Bros Interactive will be releasing the videogame adaption using a method all too familiar to comic book fans...
Episodic Content! That is, timed releases for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles, as well as the PC gaming market. A third-person action adventure, the game series will indeed be prequels to the upcoming film and detail the lives of its protagonists before superheroes went into hiding. 1UP.com is reporting that both Rorschach and Nite Owl are playable characters and the game will be developed by Deadline Games (Chili Con Carnage). Look for some extremely brutal and devestating sights and sounds, which applied against the intellectual and weighty text of the source should make for an interesting mix.
Actually a bit earlier I mentioned that its almost standard to see a videogame based on a hit movie, but that's not entirely true. In fact, in some cases it works out best when a hit film stays a hit film, or there's a good period of 'breathing' room to let one product hit hard. Look at the aforementioned The Dark Knight film, which despite breaking all sorts of box-office records (not to mention all sorts of awesomeness) is doing fine without some rushed product to capitalize (although rumor one is coming). 2006's James Bond re-boot Casino Royale was the first Bond movie since Goldeneye to not launch with a game, and despite being all sorts of amazing worked out fine (although a mere two years later the world would indeed be shocked with the be-all movie-to-videogame treatment).
Anyway, rant over and just wanted to say thanks to 1UP.com!
