The original Ninja Scroll was probably the last true 'anime' that I could watch before the industry was taken over by over-anxious fans with little shame, and while that may sound offensive to some its still true. Incredibly bloody, atmospheric, and oh-so-mature (if you count copious breast devouring as mature), Yoshiaki Kawajira's epic melding of sensory-overload storytelling remains a favorite among those craving more depth in their animated work, and its hardly surprising that a live-action remake is on the way, courtesy of Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Bros.
Don't look for the Titanic star to start hacking and slashing anytime soon, as his producing house Appian Productions will be doing the heavy lifting on this one. Keep reading for even more ninja-fueled info!
Scribe Alex Tse, currently making dreams come true by penning the upcoming Watchmen and Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man adaptations (both directed by Zach Synder) will be writing the new version. No director is attached at this point, but given Synder's penchant for ultra-violence and surprising ability to make remakes of beloved franchises work (see Dawn of the Dead 2004), I'd be down with the choice. No word yet on stars or release date, but we'll update as needed.
