XBox Live Is Truly All-American In Membership
July 31, 2008 by johnlucas

One of the XBox 360's greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses is its strong audience in the United States. This American audience gave the 7th generation home console entrant the early lead in an industry long dominated by machines from Japanese companies. Problem with that was the it was ONLY in the United States that it had this strength, a sort of living example of the trademark American myopia many in this country suffer from. U.S.A. is not the whole world regardless of what those pro wrestling belts say. And with the XBox 360 losing the sales lead to Wii in its strongest region, it all points to this trait being a weakness.

Hammering that spike further into the board is revelations on who makes up the audience on the applauded XBox Live online service. Hint to the reader: their national flag has 50 stars in fields of red, white, and blue. Read on...

DC Makes Comics Out Of Capcom's Resident Evil and Devil May Cry
July 31, 2008 by johnlucas

Detective Comics, originator of golden age era comic superheroes Superman and Batman, are once again cross-pollinating with the similarly creative world of videogaming in a couple of new comic book series. Capcom franchises Resident Evil and Devil May Cry will join Gears of War, World of Warcraft, and the recently added Mirror's Edge on DC's game-to-comicbook conversions list. Like the others it will be a part of DC's Wildstorm label.

Mirror's Edge Will Become Comic Book
July 31, 2008 by johnlucas

Words like 'buzzworthy' I hate. So I'll refer to the upcoming Mirror's Edge game from Electronic Arts as 'sensational stunna'. Hmm, maybe that's too much but let's just say the game looks promising and at the very least interesting, how 'bout that? Anyway, not missing an opportunity to catch a train before it choo-choos out of the station, DC Comics (Detective Comics with the redundant aftertitle) plans on turning the game into a 6-part comic series.

Oprah Buys a Wii
July 31, 2008 by johnlucas

Not trying to give any publicity to that intrusive gossip/paparazzo site TMZ but this is the story so many have been waiting for. The cultural entity that is Oprah Gail Winfrey has been eyeballed carefully as the 'mainstream' (whatever that means) media outlet that will shoot Wii ownership through the roof, through the ozone I should say. A personal endorsement of, perhaps, Wii Fit on her heavily watched talk show could send the already Thriller-like phenomenon into a whole new dimension perhaps of the kind Stephen Hawking theorizes about. Even though Ellen DeGeneres has beaten her to the punch with widespread media notice somewhat in this realm, it still takes an Oprah to make the earthquakes.

Finally, destiny has happened. Oprah Winfrey buys the Wii. Details to follow...

The Fable Pentalogy?
July 31, 2008 by johnlucas

First of all, let me explain my on-the-fly coining of words (we all can't be Don King). We all know what a 'trilogy' is pretty much, don't we? Tricycle, triangle, trinity...all in all 'tri' = 'three', right? So what is a 'pentalogy', you ask? Same thing as a trilogy except instead of 'tri for 3' we get 'pent for 5'. Pentagon, pentagram, pentachloronitrobenzene...you get the picture.

So why does the word "Fable" representing XBox videogame series Fable precede the brand new word for '5 related but individual literary works'? Ask series creator Peter Molyneux about that one...

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Manga Coming To America
July 31, 2008 by johnlucas

Who here likes the Turnabout Trial series on DS? Ahem, excuse me, got myself lost in translation there. Who here likes the Gyakuten Saiban series on DS? Oh, once again forgive me, nobody knows what I'm talking about. Ah, who here likes the Ace Attorney series on DS? "OBJECTION!" What? Who can't like the series famous for  adding Phoenix Wright to the fictional lawyer hall of fame with Perry Mason and Ben Matlock?

The series is so popular that a manga (illustrated books) series has already been developed in Japan. Now us lucky folks in North America get to flutter these vertically-read cartoon strips starting later this year. Listen further...

EA CEO Says: It's Time To Focus On The Wii
July 30, 2008 by johnlucas

The Bandwagon Chronicles continue. With the monster success of Nintendo's Wii in comparison to the competition (regional and global) companies of all shapes and sizes are eating great big blackbirds for lunch. Stuffed with this crow and facing the chronic cash injections Nintendo is receiving from its WiiDS Phenomenon, these companies concede failure in projecting the direction of the market and turn 180° to get in on the cashflow/audience appreciation.

One such company is Electronic Arts and its Chief Executive Officer John Riccitello sounds the alphorn to reverberate throughout the industrial mountains. He says that it's time for developers to shift focus to the Wii platform. Read on, bruh... Read More »
Wii Sue: Nintendo Goes After DS Pirates
July 29, 2008 by johnlucas

Even with all the soothing laundry detergent colored aesthetics of the Wii, don't think Nintendo has gone tender when it comes to safeguarding their intellectual properties. The red wrath of Yamauchi still rages within the now gentle lamb of the gaming industry. And to show the truth of what I'm saying, Nintendo's suing the pants off of some Japanese companies who enable piracy products to exist on the market.

Afro Samurai Delayed to 2009—Specifically January 27th

Not long after Afro Samurai's head-cutting trailer hit E3 we get disappointing news from developer Namco-Bandai. The previously destined (sort of) for Fall 2008 release of the gaming interpretation of the anime/manga series has been pushed back to 2009...January 27th to be exact. So you'll have to live out the adventures of Samuel L.'s anime counterpart only AFTER the ball drops in Madison Square Garden. Remember, extra wait often means extra quality. Prince of Persia Creator Jordan Mechner Will Create Karateka Sequel
July 27, 2008 by johnlucas

If I mention the word "Karateka" to people, a select few will say "Karate practicioner." Even fewer will say "an old video game." And most will say "Huh?" Some have seen a surreal interpretation of this game as the ninja who dances like MC Hammer to Daft Punk in YTMND's "Ninja Works It", which has since made itself a part of random avatars in various net forums.

But Jordan Mechner, the creator of the 1984 fighting action game which set the animation stage for his more famous work 1989's Prince of Persia, mentions that Karateka will be making a return. Keep reading... Read More »

Punch-Out!!'s Little Mac Featured In Captain Rainbow

There's some upcoming Wii title for Japan called Captain Rainbow from the producers of the Chibi-Robo series, skip Ltd. The Nintendo-friendly developer is known for making some very original titles and the idea of yo-yo wielding superhero trying to recapture his lost popularity on a wish-granting island is certainly...unique. Even more unusual are the cameos of Nintendo characters like Birdo who's on the island to look for boys. But who was expecting the appearance of Mike Tyson Punch-Out!!'s Little Mac in a game like this?!?

Reggie Fils-Aime Speaks On Wii's Storage Issues
July 24, 2008 by johnlucas

Ask Mr. Universal about his dedication to Wii's Virtual Console and you'll get a dose of glee and gloom at the same time. So happy that he gets to capture all of these lost games on one console; so sad that he has no room to store them all. Wii's infamous storage issues possibly trumps all of the complaints about the system (even beating the friend codes/online issues) with its 512 MB storage. Such a giant size in, say, 1986 but not now.

Signing a deal with Hollywood area United Talent Agency, EA prepares to bring many of its games to the theaters (and television). No mention on any specific titles yet but potential choices could be Mirror's Edge and Dead Space.

Here's Patrick O'Brien, EA Entertainment;'s Vice President with the company line:

"UTA is an ideal partner for us to bring the richness and storytelling nuance of our popular games into other forms of media that give consumers more ways to experience these creative concepts."

Could we possibly be seeing Madden: The Motion Picture? EA Movies: It's In The Box Office.

Famicase Exhibit Makes Art Out of Game Catridges
July 22, 2008 by johnlucas

To some videogames are art; to others videogames are entertainment. But an exhibit in Japan entertains you by making canvases out of old Nintendo Famicom cartridges.

Famicase uses the Japanese equivalent of our NES cartridges to make artistic statements. Artists are asked to imagine a videogame and then design the cart art for the game of their imagination. A particularly funny one is Breath-kun, a piece that perfectly captures the Famicom/NES ambience with the ritual blowing into the cartridges to make them work.

There are a lot more which you can check out HERE (enter and search through site). But either know your Japanese or get a translator because it's not in English.

Mega Man 9 Will Be Hard, Warns Capcom
July 22, 2008 by johnlucas

Those of you reading with a '3' in the tens column place of your age (or maybe with a '2' if following number is above '5') remember a game called Mega Man and its hand-breaking hardness, its mind-destroying difficulty. Especially the 1st one. It got slightly easier over time during that great NES run but the Mega Man series in the Nintendo days was always an example of the common skill demands game designers put on their players back in the day.

Now with the downloadable new sequel of the old style Mega Man series, Mega Man 9, your hands will be glad to know that that rewarding "challenge" is back. Do you dare to read the rest?

Possible Nintendo Controller Ban Over Patent Dispute
July 22, 2008 by johnlucas

Remember when I talked about Nintendo losing in that patent infringement case against Anascape Ltd.? That case in which the small (barely existant) east Texas company accused Nintendo of stealing their ideas with Nintendo's Wii Classic Controller, Gamecube controller and its wireless Wavebird variant? That case which was filed in 2006—over 10 years after Nintendo introduced the technologies to the market with the Nintendo 64 controller? Yeah that one.

It looks like that May verdict may have negative repercussions after all. If Nintendo doesn't succeed in its appeal, it looks like the Classic Controller, Gamecube controller and its Wavebird counterpart will be banned from the market. Read on...

E3 2008: De Blob Trailer

De Blob is a very fresh and interesting concept. A walking ball of clear water mixes himself in various paints to add a little living color to shades of gray city of Chroma. A black and white world of dullness is one that the evil I.N.K.T. Corporation likes and de Blob, the restorer of color, is the thorn in their side. Keeping de Blob from saving Chroma and its citizens are I.N.K.T.'s private police force. In the quest to turn monochrome into multi-chrome, de Blob can perform tricks and techniques to better spread the color.

What? THQ is publishing this??? An original interesting title produced by wrestlegame maker and cheap cash-in company THQ? Ah, university students from the Netherlands came up with the concept and THQ saw its promise. It had to be that way. Too original for the likes of THQ on their own. Looks fun! I might get this one.

'I Am 8-Bit' Art Exhibit Sets Stage for L.A.
July 19, 2008 by johnlucas

Those born in the 1950s and earlier most likely look down on the cherished items of their offspring. Their music, their fashions, their attitudes. The never-ending generational story where egocentrism make each generation think their generation was the best generation there ever was (if ya smell-l-l, ah excuse me). At one time videogames were scornful for most people outside of the ones who played them but today it has become more and more acceptable for all things videogame related to be culturally practiced in open air as the gaming kids became gaming adults.

I Am 8-Bit practices the celebration of videogaming culture with their annual art exhibit dedicated to the world of 1970's/1980's era gaming. And the celebration continues with the arrival of the 4th Annual I Am 8-Bit art show in Los Angeles, California.

Konami's Koji Igarashi Discusses Castlevania Judgment

Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi, the rock 'n' roll, cigarette-blazing, roughneck mastermind known as IGA, had big plans to bring a main series Castlevania adventure to Nintendo's Wii. It had been 9 years since a Nintendo home system has seen a whip crack from a slender Dracula hunting warrior. Nintendo fans had to get their Belmont fix by playing one of the numerous games on the Game Boy Advance and DS...or buy one of the competitors. But somewhere along the way he changed his mind preferring to develop a Castlevania fighting game instead.

What's behind IGA's reasoning on the making of Castlevania Judgment? Turn the page and find out...

Does this mean Mario games like Mario Party 8 and Zelda games like Link's Crossbow Training or does it mean a full-fledged series title like Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess? Or something else altogether?

Can't know. That's all Iwata-san said. It could just mean the teams are working on new games that don't have anything to do with Marioworld and Zeldaland. Or it could be another of those early teasers that last throughout the life of the system only to launch at the start of the new one much like Twilight Princess for the Gamecube eventually saw life on the Wii. All we know is that they're hard at work so let's keep our fingers crossed. Usually we only get one mega Mario and Zelda title per system so it'll be surprising to see what they have in store.

E3 2008: Wii Music Rocks Your World
July 15, 2008 by johnlucas

The Wii series is really blossoming. We've already got Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, and even Wii Chess (even though us in North America haven't yet received this one). We've just heard about the brand new Wii Sports Resort. But there's one of the Wii series that keeps getting overlooked.

Remember Wii Music? That orchestra game which lit up the imaginations of onlookers before Wii launched? Well here's some new info fresh from E3...

E3 2008: Wii Sports Resort
July 15, 2008 by johnlucas

It was inevitable. One of the biggest selling points of the Wii since its introduction was that 5 in 1 athletic smorgasbord called Wii Sports. The game that turned many people into players is now getting a sequel.

Nintendo calls it Wii Sports Resort and it comes packaged in with the new Wii Motion-Plus accuracy-aiding add-on (and its new form fitting protective silicone cond...I mean, jacket). Scheduled for a Spring 2009 release, this title takes it to the beach with games like frisbee, jet skiing and fencing making exceptional use of the more accurate add-on. Boy! Nintendo won't be satisfied until I'm using a Wii-styled fork and spoon with all the little peripherals they're putting together. My house will be awash in pearl white but I will be happy nevertheless. Thank God the Wii isn't vomit green!

E3 2008: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for DS
July 15, 2008 by johnlucas

Nintendo's announcing a lot of big games at E3 2008! So many I almost can't keep them straight. Here's one title that'll scramble your brains for sure. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS! GTA on a Nintendo system? Surely you jest. No, no jingle-belled hat on my head.

It's set for release this Winter and has the Gotham-inspired Liberty City as its backdrop. New characters with a custom game-engine but with the "same free ranging game play," according to Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer, Reggie Fils-Aime. It's actually the 2nd GTA on a Nintendo system after the Game Boy Advance's Grand Theft Auto Advance from 2004. Either way, get your stylus ready for some thug action this Christmas!
