Always ahead of the curve, these guys. While Nintendo's reaping the harvest brought by the WiiDS Phenomenon, they are certainly not lazing around on their arsenals waiting for the next generation. Insider game forum to the stars, NeoGAF.com, dug through the U.S. Patent entries to discover a new Nintendo patent that could possibly rewrite the script on game design. And, of course, it's designed by who else but Nintendo's creative mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto.
Let's see what this is all about...
Hmm. The more you live, the more you realize what little you really know. Ask Erykah Badu about it, she'll tell ya (see On & On). It's 2009 and the 7th generation of videogame consoles has been going on for a little over 3 years. The big players in this market race as well as their market positions are well known by now: Nintendo #1, Microsoft #2, Sony #3. For the year of 2008 it seemed that Sony and Microsoft would battle vigorously for the #2 position with Sony desperately trying to hold their fading status as industry champ and Microsoft positioning themselves as Sony's usurping replacement. The whole reason for Microsoft's entry into this business was to challenge Sony's encroachment on their wide-ranging business goals after all. The XBox 360's early headstart was in part aimed to throw off Sony's goals for the PlayStation 3.
Well according to a new book, Sony may have inadvertently helped Microsoft get the edge on them. Read on to find out more...
The Recession Depression is real, ladies and gentlemen. After months of rumors, the word has come direct from the source that after nearly 20 years EGM, Electronic Gaming Monthly, will be discontinued as a publication with its January 2009 issue being its last. AND the website the people behind EGM created 5 years ago, 1UP.com, has been bought by competitor UGO Entertainment (part of the Hearst Corporation's family of media entities). Both moves are the end result of their former owner's, publishing company Ziff-Davis, Inc., financial strain in the aftermath of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy March 5th of last year (which was no doubt aggravated by the overall bleak economic climate and steady decline of the total print industry in general). In consequence, the entire staff of EGM, most of the staff behind 1UP Networks' GameVideos.com, and all of the crew behind the 4 year running 1UP Show (all groups a total of about 30 employees) will not be included in the transition and thus are laid off.
More sadness to follow...
