Nintendo Historic Milestone: DS Has Outsold the Game Boy!
January 15, 2010 by johnlucas

I'm not done yet. There's more history to reveal. Get ready.

ALSO now virtually official: DS has outsold the Game Boy! Dual Screen/Developer's System is the best-selling handheld of all-time!  With the recent release of The NPD Group's December estimates (to be personally analyzed for Monday) this fact has been accounted for by everyone except for Nintendo's official announcement. Read on to learn more about this OTHER historic milestone...

Announced earlier on December 15, 2009 by independent videogame sales tracker VGChartz.com, the combined figures from Japan's Media Create, Europe-based GfK Group, and now U.S.-based NPD Group underline the fact that the many versions of the DS have outsold the lifetime sales of the many versions of the Game Boy (excepting the Game Boy Advance line).

Selling a lifetime total of 118.69 million between 1989-2002, the Game Boy existed alongside Nintendo's home consoles revolutionizing portable videogame play (and outlasting all of its rivals). Continuing in Nintendo's way of changing cultures and merging cultures, Game Boy further aided in finalizing the Computer Revolution which married these technologies to people's daily lives. It has stood for decades as Nintendo's (as well as the world's) highest-selling handheld console...but at last the Dual Screen, the Developer's System has surpassed these landmarks in Nintendo's second revolution. What took the Game Boy line 13 years to achieve, the DS line does in 5—well under half the time. Once again, Nintendo has bested themselves.

It was inevitable that this day would come with the unfathomable success Nintendo has had and continues to have with DS. Initially counted out as a gimmick, Nintendo's third pillar held the House of Mario sturdy to set the stage for the their transformative revolution. It was only a matter of time before achieved its destiny. The only challenge left now is to add in the Game Boy Advance line to the original Game Boy line for the DS to surpass. Just how long does it take to sell another 81.49 million? (PlayStation 2's 138 million - and counting - lifetime tally isn't that far out of reach either)

The Revolution was not only televised but achieved within the power of our hands.
Congratulations, Nintendo! And keep proving them all wrong. AGAIN!
