Nintendo of America, that is. Yes, your favorite game maker is taking this Wii thing to the next level. In the quest to promote a more active lifestyle (and the purchase of Nintendo products), Nintendo and the American Health Association team up to tally the contributions of physically active play to that lifestyle. According to the Journal of the American Heart Association (published January 20, 2010), nearly 70% of Americans are not getting the recommended levels of physical actvity each week. So here comes the makers of Wii Sports and Wii Fit to help save the day!
Check out the extra details as you read on...
The American Health Association recommends that all adults get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of physical health activity each week. They also believe that all kids big and small (kindergarteners to high schoolers) should get 1 hour (60 minutes) or more of aerobic physical activity each day. So to push these goals, they suggest everyone take the stairs instead of the elevator, choose a parking space further away and walk more steps, and of course, be encouraged to play active-play videogames together. Make sure to break up your activity into 10 to 15 minute sessions and if the weather acts up outside, host an active-play videogame tournament in your living room.
Furthermore, the new tag team will showcase Start! HeartWalk events across the country beginning this fall (all ages and levels of mobility welcome to participate). Current locations for these events include Dallas, Texas; San Francisco, California; Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; and, of course, Seattle, Washington, Nintendo of America's hometown. Look for some Nintendo active games to be featured at these events.
Also, the American Health Association logo will be placed on Nintendo games deemed worthy for this cause such as Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort. And this newly forged duo will co-host an Innovation Summit with representatives from the fields of science, health care, research, physical activity, fitness, and videogames. They are going to pool their brainpower to discuss the benefits of physically active videogamesand they work in tandem with those previously mentioned fields.
