MMORPG. Initials to outsiders that incite confusion, mystery, and all around befuddlement. Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Understanding the meaning spelled out and you know why people use the abbreviation. It's a genre mostly represented by the computer gaming world with its most known title World of Warcraft. But a threat to that most known status could be interrupted by MMORPG-in-development Star Trek Online currently crafted at Cryptic Studios.
Now the much-anticipated title will after 4 long years will finally see its official unveiling next month! There's more...
The time? August 10, 2008. The place? The annual Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. On the last day of the Star Trek fan get-together, MMORPG specialist Cryptic Studios will show the fruits of their 6-month labor since taking over from original developer the now-defunct Perpetual Entertainment in January. They promise gameplay footage and details on how the new MMORPG will work. And not to worry for those who can't make it to Sin City. There will be a live webcast from the game's official site StarTrekOnline.com so you can watch the debut in time with the party-goers.
It's a relief after 4 difficult years under Perpetual Entertainment's direction of the project. Layoffs, staff turnover, management transfers and all kinds of problems best defined by the term "development hell" plagued the production. Leading MMORPG maker Cryptic may be able to turn these lemons into lemonade so stay tuned.
Wired.com, the final frontier.
