E3 2008: Wii Speak - Nintendo's Voice Chat

Not long after dropping the long-awaited bomb about the arrival of Animal Crossing: City Folk, the Wii edition of the beloved alternate life franchise, Nintendo mentions that the new game will use a curious feature called Wii Speak.

Wii Speak? What's that?

Well, Curious Georgia, Wii Speak is Nintendo's bruisingly anticipated entry into voice chat. "Nintendo? Voice chat? That's unpossible," says the wise Ralph Wiggum. No, very possible. But you know Nintendo never does anything in a predictable way.

Wii Speak is a new peripheral which functions as a "community microphone" or a mic for the whole household to chatter into. Instead of just a solitary headset to scream obscenities into like a juvenile, Nintendo continues this "WE = Wii" philosophy by having the peripheral sit on top of the TV set allowing everybody in the room to shout obscenities to playmates across the Wire-Fires. Now THAT'S progress!

With the Friend Codes at least if your child hears some nasty commentary you can pin down the source of the profanity. Only take insulting dialogue from a trusted friend, never an anonymous stranger. Can't wait to see how or if this will work with other games!
