It looks like the PSP isn't the only platform to get in on the Grand Theft Auto action this shopping season, as Rockstar Games has announced their previously-exclusive Nintendo DS game, Chinatown Wars, is going more multiplatform than first thought will be debuting on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch this Fall.

Says Sam Houser of Rockstar Games:

"Chinatown Wars is a perfect match for the iPhone and iPod touch...We are very excited to bring this incredibly ambitious version of Liberty City, with this level of detail and immersive gameplay on Apple's new gaming platforms."

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is also slated to hit Sony's PSP on October 20th, while the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch version is mentioned for release sometime this Fall. Rockstar also announced fellow PSP-release, the Timbaland-produced and starring Beaterator, will also be hitting Apple's platform as well.

Although first reports have the iPhone/iPod Touch retaining most of the PSP version's graphic fidelity, it will be interesting to see if Rockstar takes advantage of the Apple platform's inherent touchscreen controls to better approximate some of the Nintendo DS title's original control-schemes.

In expanding the critically-acclaimed game from its Nintendo DS roots, its likely that Rockstar is hoping to invigorate its somewhat disappointing sales performance. Since first launching in March of this year, the game has sold less than one million copies worldwide - a far cry from the 5+ million its console cousin Grand Theft Auto 4 enjoyed in its first week alone.
