When I first discovered Phineas and Ferb on the Disney Channel, it was like finding a diamond in the rough. I used to see it on here and there, but didn't give it a chance at first because let's be honest, it's hard to watch anything on a channel that repeats the same old pre-teen demographic shows.
But there it was, a cool cartoon show packed with intersecting plot lines, fun songs, intrigue, and a pet platypus doubling as a super agent. I know, it sounds crazy, and it is....but in a fun way. If you're interested, there's more after the jump....
The show centers on the adventures of two stepbrothers who come up with wild inventions and go on crazy adventures to fight boredom during their summer vacation from school. While the two are doing that, their older sister tries to "bust" them by catching them in the act and showing their mom. It never works though, as their inventions usually disappear somehow by the time the fan favorite Perry the Platypus gets back home from fighting crime in the sub-plot of every episode. For the record, Perry has got to be one of the funniest and coolest characters to ever grace television. If his trademark platypus noise (sounds like cross between someone making a purr noise with a chipmunk / squirrel chitter), facial expressions, and kicking Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz butt don't make you laugh, I don't know what will.
The creators of Phineas and Ferb, Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh, met while working on The Simpsons and also worked together on Nickelodeon’s Rocko’s Modern Life. Povenmire later worked on Family Guy, and the cleverness of all those shows wore off on both of them, making Phineas and Ferb one of the smartest, most fun shows on TV for any age. It took the guys 16 years to get the show on TV after being rejected by most studios, but Disney gave them whatever they needed to make the show. From the perfect casting and voice acting, to the digital perfection of each episode shown in widescreen HD, you can tell every episode is handled with care.
Enough talking about it, go out there and give Phineas and Ferb a chance. You'll enjoy seeing two brothers determined to do something fun, unique, and outrageous throughout their 104 days of summer vacation, all done with brilliant comedic flair. Before you know it, you'll be chanting lines like "Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today!" and "Hey, Where's Perry?" and singing along with the rest of the fans!
