With three well-received Metroid Prime game under their belt, Nintendo hopes to effectively reboot their long-running Metroid franchise with the upcoming return-to-form Metroid: Other M for the Wii. With Team Ninja replacing Retro Studios, the game remains one of the most mysterious projects yet for the console, as well as one of the most anticipated. At their recent Media Summit in San Francisco, they've started dishing out the details, and it certainly seems that Samus Aran fans everywhere are going to have something special this summer.
Metroid: Other M is now scheduled to invade the Wii on June 27th, with an interesting mix of 2.5/3D gameplay that should shock hardcore fans to their very core. Keep reading for more metroidopolis details!
Says Nintendo on the game's impending release, straight from the press blurb:
"The game looks at the classic franchise from a new perspective: While much of the game is reminiscent of 2-D side-scrollers, players can switch the perspective into 3-D at any time as they explore the twisting passages of a derelict space station and delve deep into a cinematic, never-before-told story of bounty hunter Samus Aran's past. This new approach uses a new control scheme in which players use the Wii Remote controller held sideways to battle enemies and navigate the expansive, gorgeous environments in classic Metroid fashion, then aim at the screen with the Wii Remote pointer to blast foes in first-person and hunt the world for clues and hidden passages."
The hybrid 2.5/3D gameplay sounds straight out of Nintendo's own Super Paper Mario adventure, which worked well for the chubby plumber, but might have some proving to do in the more action-intensive world of Metroid. Still, the game looks phenomenal, and should find plenty of fans when its finally released this summer. It's been awhile since the last release of the series, Metroid Prime 3, so the interest should definitely be there!
Metroid: Other M weaves its mysterious web onto the Wii on June 27th.
