In the world of imported British television, I'd say you'd have a difficult time finding a more deserving candidate for mainstream popularity than Paul Abbott's self-contained world of Shameless. Unapologetically and at times brutally honest, the series follows the saga of super alcoholic and modern Socrates Frank Gallagher and his ever-expanding brood of children as they live, procreate, and survive in the poverty of a London-area Chatsworth Estate. I'll stop myself from rambling about how much I love the series, and I'm looking forward (mostly out of sheer curiosity) to Showtime's anticipated remake, which features William H. Macy in the title role.
Can the Americanized Shameless live up to its own legacy and become its own thing? Or will it follow in the heavily-trafficed footsteps of many a failed attempt to import a superb British show? The initial trailer hasn't convinced me either way, though it's pretty impressive how faithful it seems - right down to exact dialogue and locations.
