Ready for fascinating factoids? Try this one out. The Sony Corporation—through Sony Computer Entertainment, Incorporated—announces that (as of January 31, 2011) they have sold 150 million PlayStation 2 consoles worldwide in its nearly 11 year old lifetime! WOW!! Put an asterisk on the word "sold", though. That "sold" means sold to retail outlets not customers—which means shipped. But nevertheless this milestone further solidifies the PS2 as THE best-selling home console of all time. Quite an accomplishment coming on the eve of its 11th anniversary (debuted March 4, 2000 in Japan).

And there's more. Read on...

The dominator of the 6th generation of videogame consoles also boasts game sales of 1.52 billion worldwide. That's billion—with a 'B'—not million. Sony says the PS2 has a game library of 10,828 different titles for its vast varied audience. The company also reminds the world that the PS2 was the FIRST home computer entertainment system to integrate DVD technology. By doing this, the PS2 helped to establish the DVD format as the STANDARD media disc format around the world. Yes, the PS2 is one of the main reasons why the world jumped to DVDs. They also didn't neglect to talk about the PS2's EyeToy Camera allowing players to interact with the game on-screen through body movements and image projection. Take that Wii! We've been doing it since '03!

Sony says they will continue serving their PS2 customers in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South America (what no Africa?). Demand is still strong enough in these regions. One hell of a Valentine's Day gift from Sony to game fans everywhere! The PS2 will stand in history as the gold standard for the videogaming business. Legendary wrestler "Nature Boy" Ric Flair would always say, "To be the man...WOO! You gotta BEAT the man!" The PS2 is The Man. And it's going to be tough to beat this. Congratulations PS2!
