The impossible begins next December as Peter Jackson and Crew bring us the first chapter of his Lord of the Rings-injected version of J.R.R. Tolkien's immortal tale with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and now we've got the first trailer and poster to share with Middle-earth fans everywhere. While some consider it the 'prequel' to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I'd like to think the opposite, although I'm going to be in the (vast) minority when the phenomenon begins next year, and which helps explain the utter seriousness of the first trailer and many of the bookend scenes that are sure to follow.

Martin Freeman was the perfect, nay, only real choice for Bilbo Baggins, and Sir Ian McKellen really is the only Gandalf we'll ever need. The rest of the dwarf cast looks amazing, as do the beautiful landscapes and stunning scenery; it should, considering we've visited them all before. I'm still not down with Peter Jackson burdening this smaller adventure down with as many Lord of the Rings characters as he can, as it just doesn't seem appropriate, but there are worse things in the world than getting to see some old friends again (and for the 'first' time!).
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey begins on December 14th. Check out the first trailer over at Apple's trailer site right HERE!
