id Software: PC Market No Longer Primary Focus

With developers either leaving or considerably scaling back their efforts on the flagging PC games market, it shouldn't come as any surprise when one of the industry's most powerful (and popular) companies makes the case that PC gaming just ain't what it used to be.  John Carmack of id Software chatted it up with industry rag Toms Hardware for a compelling interview that centered around the upcoming title Rage for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  It didn't take long for the conversation to center on the 500 lb elephant in the room:

"We still think the PC is a market worth supporting, but we’re not making decision around the PC. It’s probably more of the junior partner in the cross-platform strategy..."

The man behind such hits as Quake and Castle Wolfenstein also waxes about the current state of PC gaming in this age of pirating and memory capacity.  How does he feel about coding on the Xbox 360 vs the PlayStation 3?  Will Rage indeed look 'much better' on the PS3 than 360?  Lots of clarifying, and lots of answers for the ready 'n willing consumer.

But fear not, PC-heads, as the company has no intention on abandoning the format that made them what they are.  Says Carmack:

“We certainly expect Rage and the Doom project on the PC. We’re contractually obligated to have Rage on the PC, and I would be stunned if we did not do Doom 4 for the PC..."

But in all honesty, its the 'would be stunned' if Doom 4 didn't make it to the PC that should give some fans a bit of a quiver.  It certainly sounds like whatever happens, the upcoming super-sequel to the famed franchise will no doubt be making a console debut.  But a Doom game that misses the PC?  For shame!
