Wii Speak Accessory CAN BE PURCHASED USED - Says Nintendo
November 25, 2008 by mruniversal

Whoopsie!  Chock another rush-to-judgement positively SQUASHED by a little patience and appeal to sanity.  A few weeks ago fellow editor John Lucas and I were chatting as to whether or not we should write up a story concerning that curious MTV Blog article about Nintendo's 'decision' to not allow used Wii Speak accessories to function, as replacing the included (and necessary) code for the upcoming Wii Speak Channel would be impossible.  It just seemed so...incorrect.  Turns out it was, as the company never intended to make the service unavailable to those who picked up one up used.

Keep reading for the whole report, with a few well-earned jabs at the utter insanity of irresponsible blog reporting...

Professional videogame web publication was a bit more professional in their coverage, choosing research over rehash, and was able to extract this comment from Nintendo UK:

"Nintendo can confirm that when consumers purchase the Wii Speak accessory, they are provided with a Wii Download Ticket with a unique number. The ticket, which can be redeemed via the Wii Shop Channel, will enable the user to download the Wii Speak Channel free of charge to a single Wii console...Any consumer who may have misplaced their Wii Download Ticket number for the Wii Speak Channel or require a new number following a Wii exchange may contact their local Nintendo Customer Services department, where they can request a replacement Wii Download Ticket number."

Presumably, as is often the case, this policy will translate over to North American users as well.  While I won't name any specific blogs, shame to all those who not only prematurely blasted Nintendo's assualt on used accessories, but the used game market as well.  This has been a perfect example of that little Mark Twain maxim: "a lie can travel the world while the truth is putting on its shoes."  Or in this case, blatant ineptitude on silly, silly blogs.

Thanks to Eurogamer for keeping the peace.
