Club Nintendo Sets Up Shop In North America
December 17, 2008 by johnlucas

FINALLY! At long last! People living in the North American continent have the opportunity to join the treehouse that is Club Nintendo (maybe I should have used a nightclub reference instead). Club Nintendo, that customer loyalty service where fans who show their support get rewarded with limited edition merchandise and sweet prizes. It was always the envy of Nintendo players in Canada, the U.S.A., and Mexico to see their Japanese and later European counterparts get to revel in a mass of unique Nintendo collectables. You could assume that since North America was the region with the most spend-ready customer base that the Club was reserved for the hometown folks in Japan as a default and for Europe as a compensation since they notoriously used to (and sometimes still do) get ignored for timely hot-ticket releases. But now that the world of Nintendo is better coming together (South Africa's and Australia's Club Nintendos have been going on for most of the year now) at least we in the former "New World" finally get a chance to participate.

Listen to the following to see how...

How Club Nintendo works is through buyers of Nintendo-published games registering their games to the service by inputting the packed-in PIN codes that come with every retail release (not likely to be found if bought used). Through this and filling in little questionnaires/surveys, the owners will receive Coins which can be accumulated with each registered purchase to cash-in for exclusive prizes and promotions. Such prizes like the Game & Watch Collection for the DS, Nintendo playing cards (representing Nintendo's original business), a DS case, and a Wiimote holder for a few examples.

Each Wii game registered (and accompanying survey completed) will gain the owner 50 Coins, each DS game registered (and filled-out survey) will capture 30 Coins, and each Virtual Console or WiiWare title bought through the Wii Shop Channel registered (with finished survey) will earn 10 Coins. As of right now, prizes run from 300 Coins to 800 Coins. And not only do newly released games get to be registered but a list of past games from the current systems can be registered as well. What a way to build company-to-customer trust. By the way, those who already have a MyNintendo account from the main site can transfer their account over to Club Nintendo with already registered games able to redeem the new club's Coins.
