Fans of animation great Hayao Miyazaki can expect an August 14th release stateside of his newest masterpiece, Ponyo. Ponyo is being brought to the United States courtesy of Walt Disney Pictures, and is a compelling tale inspired by Hans Christen Andersen's The Little Mermaid. Though the Japanese have long since enjoyed the movie, it will finally be anime fans in America's time to experience the timeless tale.
Ponyo follows the story of a young goldfish who dreams of becoming human. Interestingly enough, Ponyo will be released by a company who created their own adaptation of The Little Mermaid years ago, except you will remember that Ariel was nothing like a mere goldish. The American release of Ponyo will feature a star-studded cast, with the likes of Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, Tina Fey, and Matt Damon. Noah Cyrus, younger sister to Miley, will be providing the voice of the titular Ponyo - this is a Disney adaptation, after all.
Executive producers Hayao Miyazaki and John Lasseter will be reprising their roles for Ponyo, having previously produced Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. If Miyazaki's previous works are any indication, Ponyo should be a hit.
