None of us like going to the dentist - especially children! However, we can always expect children to enjoy a good old Game Boy session or some time with a CD player. Geoffrey A. Hart, an anaesthesiologist based in Boston, has come up with a rather strange way to combine the two. The PediSedate, the closest relative to American Gladiators gear I've ever seen in the medical business, is a headset designed for use with a CD player or Game Boy in order to calm children before an important operation or procedure.
This is quite the strange little device, indeed! To get the process of anesthetizing underway, nurses connect nitrous oxide to the headset, where a snorkel nosepiece is brought down over the child's face. The gas is pumped through and the patient can be sedated rather comfortably while playing a game or listening to music.
PediSedate is already in use, having been conducting a second round of clinical trials at a hospital in New England. It's even been patented, so we may see a surge in the amount of hospitals adopting this device. However, what's strange is the fact that hardly anyone uses an original Game Boy anymore, or even a CD player. Maybe if it goes more mainstream, we can see an update in the technology being used to help keep kids comfortable.
