Whatever your feelings about the original Super Mario Galaxy, many found Nintendo's mascot's first spherical adventure to be one of - if not the - single best game released in the current generation of consoles, and one that easily took its place amongst the greatest ever. No faint praise, indeed. But while the idea of a direct sequel would be status quo for just about every other videogame in existence, when it comes to canon Mario titles, things can get a bit strange. Nintendo's recent Media Summit in San Francisco was just the place to help make the mushroom sale.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is officially headed to the Wii console on May 23rd, with new levels, adventures, enemies, and friends along with it. Chief among them is the return of Yoshi, in all his gassy, tongue-tool using, forgiving nature. Yes, on the surface, it may look like more of the same...but when its more of one of the best games ever made kind of same, that could be a very good thing. Keep reading for even more Mario madness, including the new gameplay trailer!
Here's how Nintendo themselves describe Super Mario Galaxy 2, straight from their press blurb:
"The game includes the amazing gravity-defying, physics-based exploration from the first game, but is loaded with entirely new galaxies and features to challenge and delight players. On some stages, Mario can pair up with his dinosaur buddy Yoshi and use his tongue to grab items and spit them back at enemies. Players can also have fun with new items such as a drill that lets our hero tunnel through solid rock."
...no real surprises there, although the first gameplay trailer is absolutely popping with new stuff, with the return of Yoshi headlining. It looks like we'll be using the Wii remote (ala Space Junk Galaxy) to help control his wild tongue, and that he's far more integral to the adventure than his all-too-brief appearance in New Super Mario Bros Wii. Looks great, so far, and sounds even better.
Enjoy the new trailer and watch for Super Mario Galaxy 2 to hit the Wii console on May 23rd!
