Look at all these rumors, surrounding me everyday. I just need some time, some time to get away. From all these rumors, I can't take it no more. My best friend said there's another one now about a new PSP in stores. Yeah I took some liberties with that Timex Social Club classic but rumors about the successor to the PlayStation Portable, PSP to its friends, just won't stop, can't stop. The latest edition of the Grapevine Juice Times concerning the "PSP 2" comes from 1UP.com's David Ellis and his mysterious "sources".
You want the vibe from the source? Then read on...
Word is that Sony will unveil this wholly new PSP at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) that runs from June 2nd to June 4th. After this the secret sources say that Sony will release this to stores starting September in Japan and sometime either in October or November for North America (which includes of course the U.S.A.). Oh and forget past rumored names like the "PSP 2" and "PSP-4000". Of the possible names the handheld will receive the sources say they include PSP Slide, PSP Flip, and PSP Go! With the release of many Go!-branded Sony products like the Go!View video-on-demand service and the Go!Cam 1.3 megapixel digital camera for the PSP in the European market, the feeling is strong that the most likely title will be PSP Go!
Explaining those possible Slide and Flip codenames, the design of the new PSP is said to be reminiscent of those popular slide cell phones so perfect for texting. The back of the portable's body slides down under screen revealing Sony's trademark directional pad, analog control bump, and familiar geometric symbol-faced action buttons. Just one analog bump though. Sorry dual analog fans. The sources that be mention nothing about Sony doubling your analog fun instead staying true to their familiar layout of the original PSP. Hey maybe they'll surprise you. You never know.
More details reiterate prior rumors that the Universal Media Disc format will be non-existent on the system and that Sony will have in digital download form over 100 classic and new PSP selections hoppin' and ready to go at launch. Gran Turismo Mobile is one such proposed prominent title. There is said to be 2 models available: one that holds 8GB of built-in flash memory; another that holds 16GB of built-in flash memory. Also, the grapevine whisperers talk about borrowing elements from Sony's probably soon-to-be-abandoned mylo 2 Internet Device. These elements are said to include a 800 X480 pixel touchscreen and a camera on the backside of the handheld. Borrowing from who now?
Of course you'll never get Sony to own up to all of this grape juice splattered all over the vines. Their statement on the matter stands firm as the company "does not comment on rumors or speculation." Wow, just like the police in a major news conference!
The PSP's gained strength in Japan along with a lineup of recently released power titles like Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny seems to give Sony the ammunition to attempt to fend off Nintendo's DSi and Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch as competitors. The reception at E3 2009 may give some clues to the future. May put some more Metal Gear Solid 4-style egg on my face in regards to my prediction that Sony is not long for this videogaming business.
