The return of classic, 2D franchises in their classic, 2D gameplay glory continues as Sega has officially popped the cork and let loose their inner hedgehog - Sonic the Hedgehog, to be precise. The former Project Needlemouse has finally been revealed, and it appears that almost two decades of begging, pleading, and virtually ignoring subsequent 3D versions along the way have won the day. Behold, the long-awaited sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 is officially on the way!

Gamespot revealed today that Sonic 4: Episode 1 will pick up (roughly) where Sonic & Knuckles left off and is a direct continuation of the original Sega Genesis series. That means fans can finally look forward to more super-spins, dashes, light power-ups, and blistering speeds with new graphics that look strikingly like the recent (and excellent) Nintendo DS versions of the series.
While some had speculated that Sega's previous emphasis on making the next 2D Sonic game in high-definition excluded Nintendo's Wii console, it seems that isn't the case, as all three current-generation gaming platforms will receive their episodic hedgehog love when the game is finally released for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and WiiWare services this summer. A smart choice, given how well past games in the series (even the trash ones) perform on Nintendo's machine, with Sega's mascot's Olympic mash-up becoming Sega's best-selling game of all-time.
The Gamespot piece also indicates that the game will include motion-control, at least in both Wii and PlayStation 3 versions.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 is looking to blast-process its way to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii consoles sometime this summer. Sega, your fans have been incredibly patient over the years, so don't bungle this one. Thanks to Gamespot for the bits, and enjoy the debut trailer right below!
